Rhode Island Is Learning, Thanks to You!

Message from Commissioner Infante-Green

We are now well into the 2020-2021 school year, and I wanted to take a moment to reflect on where we are and where we are going.

Let me start with a huge, heartfelt thank you to our school communities – students, families, teachers, principals, superintendents, and staff. Your efforts and hard work have gotten us to where we are today. Across Rhode Island, students are learning – with many back in their classrooms.

We are delivering on the promise of a high-quality education under unprecedented circumstances. On September 14, we said, “Rhode Island Is Ready to Learn,” and you proved it. Thank you! It took a lot of hard work and planning to get us to that first day of school.

We would not have made it without the steady leadership of Governor Raimondo; the health and safety guidance of our partners at the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDOH); the total commitment of my team at the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE); and the on-the-ground planning by our schools.

As we have these past few months, we will continue to keep you apprised of the latest news and host events and Q&A forums to address your questions. We will continue to provide our school communities with resources, including protocols and playbooks. We will continue making sure schools and families have access to forms and guidance for knowing the rules and keeping everyone safe. We will continue to post explainer videos so that Rhode Islanders can hear directly from the experts. And we are even providing activities for our youngest learners so they can have fun while making masks.

RIDE, RIDOH, and the Rhode Island National Guard (RING) also stood up our Education Operations Center (EdOC), which is giving real-time support to schools across the state as they navigate the challenges that this year continues to present us. Along with launching this support system, Rhode Island also has a dedicated PK-12 Testing Program.

Our state stands together in a way that is unique to Rhode Island, and we insist that this global pandemic will not stop us from delivering on the promise of a high-quality education to all of our students. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all for the work that we have accomplished. I am looking forward to staying united during this school year.

Sincerely,

Angélica Infante-Green
Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education
